People moves: SomniGroup promotes HR chief to legal as Shopify names new GC

Plus, Northwest Bank, Silver Elephant and Plato Income Maximiser bolster their legal teams

NYSE-listed bedding company Somnigroup International has announced the promotion of chief human resources officer Kindel Nuno to the role of chief human resources officer and general counsel.

‘Combining the roles of chief human resources officer and general counsel brings greater efficiency and agility to the HR and legal functions at the parent company level,’ said Scott Thompson, Somnigroup’s chairman, CEO and president.

‘Over the course of her 18-year legal career, Nuno has navigated numerous challenges and strategic events impacting Mattress Firm and other clients she represented. Through those experiences, she brings clarity, confidence and integrity to complex decisions, which I know will benefit the Somnigroup team in the years to come.’

Elsewhere, Pennsylvania-headquartered Northwest Bank has confirmed the appointment of Erin Siegfried as its new chief legal counsel and corporate secretary.

In the new role, Siegfried will lead the company's legal function and provide strategic counsel to the team and board of directors while reporting directly to the company's president and CEO Louis Torchio.

Before joining the bank, she served as a deputy general counsel for The Huntington National Bank for more than seven years. Prior to this, she was a partner in the corporate department of Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur LLP.

North of the border, Silver Elephant Mining, a mineral exploration company, has named Stephanie Lee as its new vice president of legal.

She joins Silver Elephant from private practice at a Canadian law firm, where she advised public and private issuers on financings, disclosure, mergers and acquisitions as well as regulatory compliance.

Lee succeeds Alex Bayer who will step down from the role on October 25.  The company thanks Bayer for his ‘valuable contributions’ during his tenure.

Meanwhile at Shopify, an 8-K filing confirmed that Jean Niehaus will serve as the company’s new general counsel, succeeding Jess Hertz who has been promoted to chief operating officer.

Prior to her promotion, Niehaus served as Shopify’s vice president of legal since 2022. Before this, she served as director and associate general counsel, strategic response - legal for Facebook. She also acted as legal counsel for DropBox and associate for O’Melveny & Mayers LLP.

Over in Australia, in an announcement to the ASX exchange, fund manager Plato Income Maximiser confirmed that Calvin Kwok has resigned as company secretary.

The board thanked Calvin for his service and contribution to the company and ‘wishes him well in his future endeavors’.

Succeeding Kwok as company secretary is Terence Kwong, effective immediately.

Kwong was chief legal, risk and compliance officer at Pinnacle Investment Management Group.  Before that he practiced as a solicitor at Clayton Utz and Clifford Chance LLP in Sydney and London, specializing in financial services, funds management, mergers and acquisitions and private equity.
