People moves: Julie Coletti joins Illumina as its new CLO

Plus Coinbase, First Interstate BancSystem and Land’s End legal chiefs set to exit

Illumina has named Julie Coletti as its new chief legal officer, effective from August 3.

In her new role, she will lead Illumina's global legal, regulatory, and government affairs teams and serve as corporate secretary to Illumina’s board.

Before joining the company, Coletti worked as chief legal and regulatory officer at Align Technology. Prior to that, she held senior leadership positions at the likes of Danaher Corporation and Bayer HealthCare.

She also serves as a director for Fortis Life Sciences, a provider of solutions to life science and diagnostic companies.

‘Julie is a highly accomplished legal and business leader with deep experience across the life sciences and medical technology sectors,’ says Jacob Thaysen, CEO at Illumina. 

Meanwhile, NYSE-listed aerospace and defense company General Dynamics has confirmed that Nick Barnaby will be promoted to the role of SVP and general counsel as of January 1, 2027.

‘Nick has excelled as deputy general counsel and has garnered respect across the company,’ says Phebe Novakovic, chair and CEO. ‘He is a strong leader with a first-rate legal mind and will make an outstanding general counsel.’

Barnaby joined General Dynamics in 2018 as assistant general counsel, before being promoted to staff vice president and associate general counsel in 2021. Earlier in his was a partner at Jenner & Block and an associate at Latham & Watkins. He will succeed Greg Gallopoulos, who is retiring at the end of the year.

‘Greg has served with excellence for more than 15 years and has been a critical part of our leadership team throughout that time,’ adds Novakovic. ‘He will be profoundly missed.’

Staying in the US, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has confirmed the resignation of chief legal officer and corporate secretary, Paul Grewal as of July 31.

Before joining Coinbase in 2020, Grewal served as VP and deputy general counsel at Facebook (now Meta). Earlier in his career he held tenures as partner at Howrey LLP and was a magistrate judge for the US District Court of California.

In a LinkedIn post, Grewal writes: ‘I will be a Coinbase ally for life and am grateful to Brian Armstrong, Emilie Choi and the Coinbase board for the opportunity of a lifetime. My next adventure awaits; more on that in due course.’

The company has also confirmed plans to promote vice president of legal, Molly Abraham to the role of general counsel and secretary.

For the remainder of his tenure, Grewal will serve as an advisor to ensure a smooth transition period.

Elsewhere in an 8-K filing, Sterling Infrastructure has confirmed that Mark Wolf, general counsel, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary will retire later this year.

Before joining Sterling Infrastructure, Wolf served as VP, general counsel and corporate secretary for US Well Services, and prior to that as VP Legal – global surface technologies, subsea services and north America region at TechnipFMC. No set date has been given nor any mention of Wolf’s successor.

At the same time, First Interstate BancSystem has ended the employment of Kirk Jensen as its EVP, general counsel and corporate secretary.

Prior to working for the bank, Jensen served as a partner at BuckleySandler LLP, he was also an associate for the likes of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, and Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice.

No reason for his termination has been given and First Interstate BancSystem says a ‘national search’ is underway for his replacement.

Over at Canadian gold producer Lion One, Hamish Greig, the company’s VP, corporate secretary and former director, has resigned.

He joined the company in 2010 from G2 Consultants where he was part of the investor relations team and prior to that VP of corporate development at Palladon Ventures.

In a statement, the company said it ‘extends its sincere thanks to Mr. Greig for his many contributions over the past 16 years and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors.’

Lastly, American retailer Land’s End has confirmed that Peter Gray has resigned as president, of Lands’ End Licensing and as chief administrative officer and general counsel.

Before joining the retailer, Gray held numerous executive roles for the likes of Tumi, ModusLink Global Solution and Hale and Dorr LLP.

No reason for his resignation was shared, nor details of plans to find his successor.
