Former Trump official CJ Mahoney has been promoted within Microsoft, announcing on LinkedIn that he has been named as the firm’s General Counsel, ‘leading the talented team of lawyers, paralegals and business professionals who support the company's engineering, sales and marketing efforts.’
Mahoney joined Microsoft in early 2021, coming from a two-year stint in government during President Donald Trump’s first term.
Mahoney served as Deputy United States Trade Representative in the Executive Office of the President from March 2018 to December 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Prior to his time in government, Mahoney was a visiting lecturer at Yale Law School, was partner at Williams & Connolly and served as a law clerk to Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy as well as Judge Alex Kozinski. Mahoney started his career as a business analyst at McKinsey & Company.
In what has been reported as a sign of Microsoft’s desire to work across both parties, the computing giant has also named Lisa Monaco as its new president of global affairs, overseeing cybersecurity policy and global initiatives with governments and organizations.
According to her Wikipedia page, Monaco served as US Deputy Attorney General from 2021 to 2025 during Joe Biden’s presidency and as homeland security advisor under Barack Obama.
